Hurricane Season Accelerates Grid Construction

Every May, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) releases the Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook, estimating the number of tropical storms and hurricanes for the upcoming season.  This year, NOAA predicts an 85% chance of an above-normal Atlantic hurricane season, with 17-25 named storms (average being 14), 8-13 hurricanes (average being 7), and 4-7 major hurricanes (average being 3).

Parts of the Caribbean and Gulf Coast are just beginning to recover from previous hurricanes, and utility companies are working tirelessly to restore power to millions. During hurricanes, pole-top transformer leads suffer shear force trauma, leading to bending, twitching, and vibration.

In anticipation of the hurricane season, Copperweld has prepared a substantial inventory of copper-clad steel (CCS) transformer leads and prioritized expedited deliveries to assist in hurricane relief efforts.

Copperweld Stingray CCS leads are more reliable than copper in high winds and exhibit superior mechanical strength. These flexible, easy-to-install, clad copper-clad steel high-voltage transformer leads are designed for use between primary phase conductors and equipment bushings.

They offer greater resistance to wind fatigue and weather damage, boast five times the bend fatigue durability of copper leads, 1.5 times the breaking load strength, and are easier to install than traditional clad leads. Additionally, the TPV UV protection coating prevents outages caused by contact with wildlife and vegetation, which can lead to arcing and transformer damage or tripping.
